Always good to try a bareboat or crewed yacht in the type you are considering. I did so last year on a bareboat charter in the Abacos, where I tried a Fountain-Pajout cat. All I can say is never again for me. I found the boat to handle about the same as a mono, but more importantly to roll at least as much as a mono if not more. I just did not find the boat to handle well in 2-4 footers from almost any direction. The cabins were tight to say the least (this was a 37' or near abouts), and although this would be a comment for just this mfg, the craftsmanship I found to be very poor. As to my experience with boats, I have been bareboating since 1992, often twice a year and have owned mono's from 34 to 40' for about as long.
Again this is a comment from only one use of a cat, perhaps other attempts on cat's from other mfg's could be very different, however I will stick with mono's in the future. As for it's aesthetic appeal, cat's are not for me either but beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder so of course take that comment for what it is worth.
