I had the 5kw NL genset installed in a previous boat. It was quiet (with
soundshield), reliable and it worked. Everyone told me that the NL is the
cadillac of gensets, they just keep on ticking. Fishing boats in the
Northwest almost totally rely on NL gensets for refrigeration and boat
    systems power.

In reality the life of any genset will almost totally depend on how you use
them. If you load them to 50% routinely and never run them all night at near
zero load, then they will last a long, long time- maybe 10,000 hours for an
1,800 rpm unit like the NL.

The 3.600 rpm gensets will last significantly shorter with the same usage
    profile.
