In 2000 we bought a 1981 38' Gulfstar Sundeck motor cruiser and put
2500 hours on the Perkins 4.236T engines over the next five years...I
thought we were thru cruising at age 75 and sold her..(The two
happiest days??) and we tried to retire to life on land...We soon
discovered that we were NOT thru cruising so we've just bought a 1980
Gulfstar with the same hull design and same engines...(Better the
Devil you know??)..This Gulfstar had been a live-aboard for years and
had been dock-bound for all that time, but she was a bargain (?) and
we really love bringing her back to shape..We cleaned her up a bit and
brought her from the East Coast of Florida to the West Coast over a
four day period...She ran fine but used about a quart per day per
engine but no smoke..
Both boats are propped with 22 X 22 four blade wheels..The 1981
cruised at 8 knots at 1800 rpm with a 2400 WOT rpm...I cruised the
1980 at 1800 rpm also without checking WOT rpm until the last
day...When I checked belatedly the WOT rpm I found she only turned
2050 rpm in gear but 2500 out of gear...I then found that I could
maintain the 8 knot cruise by throttling back to 1650 rpm...My concern
is whether or not this is an efficient rpm for these turboed diesels?
They quit using oil at the lower rpm..I believe I had them in a strain
the first part of the trip..
I ran thru the Michigan propeller test and the wheels it suggested
were 24 X 16...which they would be happy to sell me at $1950
each...I'd like to keep the ones I have, thank you...Any thoughts from
the group would be appreciated...
