Some of you may recall I experienced a Maxwell windless failure
last year. During a manual retrieve of the anchor I came to the
conclusion the bar inserted into the windless capstan was very
poorly designed. It was essentially a round peg in square hole.
I had a, for lack of a better term, slug machined that fits over
the existing pin, converting the mating surface from the center
of the round pin to a flat surface. Pictures of the slug can be
viewed at the following url:

I have not had a chance to test it yet, and it may in fact not
be very effective. The possibility exists that the slope of the
slug will translate into a force that attempts to eject the bar
from the slot. This is a first attempt, so experience is needed
to see how well it will work.
If it does work better than the original configuration I will be
having a run of these slugs made. They fit over the existing bar,
well at least the bar I have, and all you need to do is drill and
tap the bar to accept two screws to hold the slug on the bar.
Yes its a stainless/aluminum combination and there may be some
corrosion interaction, but once this slug is attached I dont think
there is any reason to disassemble it. Ill advise how well this
works in the next few days. If it works, Id be happy to have
several machined and pass them along to list members at cost.
Please reply to me off list () if you are
interested in hearing how this works and if you might want one.
Thanks!
