Bailey, a Golden Retriever, had to be put to sleep this morning. Suddenly,
this morning his hind legs didn't work very well. He made it ashore, but
collapsed on the grass and we carried him to the car and the vet.
There was a mass on his spleen and his blood tests proved to be quite bad as
he was bleeding internally. No conservative therapy was indicated and his
blood's ability to coagulate was gone.
They had me bring George in and George sensed what was happening as he was
subdued and put his head on me. I was on the floor holding Bailey's head and
keeping his front paws warm as he was getting cold. He passed in my arms
with his right eye fixed on me - unlike the left, it never closed.
As many of you know, Bailey was extremely affectionate and loved people in
general and children in particular. In the last two months he has had a
neighbor's puppy to play with and he let the puppy attack him without end.
He seemed to enjoy the rough house. Having George with me is softening the
impact, but Bailey was unique and will never be forgotten.
I now realize that it is not so much our love for them, rather it is their
devotion to us that makes parting so very hard.
Ron
