An old story, but true. Your tech must have been an ex-Navy Electronics
Tech (ET). In the old days, we used dollar bills to clean the contacts on
the key card readers of the crypto equipment. Generally a good dollar bill
would work fine, but a $20 always worked better since higher denomination
bills are usually less circulated then smaller ones and they tended to be
newer and 'crispier'

Subject: T&T: For Benmar Cetek Auto-pilots on
Rich,
In another life I had a Mainship 34 with a Benmar A-pilot. When it began to
malfunction I called an electronics technician out for a look. (I was
saving my pennies for one of those new-fangled LORAN thingies so I didn't
really want a new autopilot). The technician cracked the case open, asked
if I had a dollar bill, sprayed the contacts with some kind of cleaner and
pulled the bill though the contacts several times. His explanation was that
the bill is abrasive enough to clean and polish the contacts without
damaging them. He then put the dollar bill in HIS pocket, explaining that a
$20 usually works better. Yea, right!
