If you really don't intend to row across the Atlantic and want a cheap boat
and motor consider the 8' Walker Bay dinghy and a low end MinnKota trolling
motor. The price of the Walker Bay has been raised to $699 at West Marine but
used versions are available on eBay for half that. WalMart sells a MinnKota
trolling motor for about $100. When powered by a #24 deep discharge battery (I use
a Sears Diehard) the little motor will push the dinghy at about 4 knots for
three hours. If you want to go fast the motor will get you up to five knots but
only for 2 hours.
But rowing is good exercise and moves the boat just about as fast. Give it
another try.
