A surveyor friend of mine said to lay some
fiberglass cloth and resin over to stop it. Is that a legit thing to
      repair that way? endsnip)

A few years ago I had a ski boat with fiberglass muffler, and do to a
mechanic friends error (left a plug out of an exaust maifold after
de-winterizing) I melted one end completely off the muffler. Fearing
I was out of business for a week or two I took it back to him to
order a replacement muffler. He just rebuilt the end of it out of
standard fiberglass and resin he used in all the boat repairs (I
don't know whether it was epoxy or whatever) but it worked great and
still looked and worked perfectly years later when I sold the boat. I
think you'll be fine with this type of repair.
