While returning from a trip to New Bern NC, the boat suddenly lurched. I
thought that I had picked up a crab trap line on the starboard engine though we
were in 12-14 foot of water and there were no floats for crab traps visible in
the area. I thought of going overboard to check but after seeing the many
jellyfish in the water, decided to check by using boat hook. Found no evidence
of prop being fouled The engine wouldn't start after this check so traveled
on to Swansboro on one engine. Solved the engine no-start problem when I saw
that the ring terminal on the starter had corroded and broken off. The engine
started with no problem but there was no forward thrust even when going to
3000 rpm; it was like there was no prop. After getting back to our marina,
discussed this with marina owner who suggested another more likely possibility, a
bad damper plate on the transmission. To confirm this assessment, I started
engine and watched the shaft as I increased rpms. It did not turn so his
assessment may be right. How big a job is changing a damper plate? The engine is
Volvo TMD40A; transmission is BW MS3. Is it likely that I could order and get
the correct replacement without having the old one out first to get size or
identifying number?
Thanks for any comments / recommendations.
