There are timer relays available to prevent burning out pumps and other
equipment that cannot tolerate long term running.
BEP makes a conveniently packaged unit with adjustable time periods.
For those with access to industrial supply houses there are any number of
industrial control relays with adjustable times from milliseconds to hours
or even days.
Most of these can be triggered either by power ON or power OFF for a
variety of applications.
Power off can be used to give a delayed "lights on" after you hit the main
switch or a "run on" for the bilge pump after the float switch signals no
more water.
Power ON switching is perfect for controlling the run time duration of such
things as macerators or overboard pumps that empty the holding tank when
off-shore.
