    Not quite true. French polishing can be done with any varnish product that
    can be thinned with an evaporative solvent. I varnished several large Kashmiri
    walnut tables with thinned polyurethane a number of years ago using the French
    polishing method. Despite numerous spills of alcohol loaded drinks, they look
    as good as new. I agree that shellac is not suitable for a boat because it
    will show water stains.
