Sailboats are designed to minimize both frictional and form resistance. Sleek
hulls, slack bilges, transoms designed not to make waves. The weight in a
sailboat is concentrated largely in the keel where it presents little drag. So if
you compared equal displacement trawlers and sailboats you would find that
the sailboat has less cross sectional area and moves through the water easier.
Hence it takes less power to move a sailboat at hull speed. The NAs havn't sold
us out. The 1 hp. per 500 lbs. displacement is an average figure. YMMV.
