am told by the manufacturer that if taken
care of, I can expect to get about 10-15,000 hours out of a genset. My
mechanic and a local distributer (who would like to sell me a new genset) say
that I can only expect to get about 2500 to 3500 hours out a genset
I have a 1993 16KW Northern Lights genset; I have talked to the factory guys
at boat shows; I have put some money into mine which is at about 4000 hours
and uses a little oil, about a quart every 25 hours or so.
The factory rep told me that genset life is shortened by how many times it
is started up and shut down. My oil consumption now is probably the result of
the previous owners not loading the genset enough. Not loading the genset
also causes reduced engine life.
They tell me the electrical end can be rebuilt, and that the engine end can
be rebuilt too.
The Northern Lights people are great on the phone and talked me through
taking the top off of the genset to retrieve the pieces of the foam air cleaner
element that got inhaled but not quite into the actual engine. Keep it cool.
Don't crank it when it won't start or you could crank water up the exhaust,
there's a warning on the panel on that; change the air cleaner; change the oil;
keep it cool. Try to keep a load on it; last longer than you will. JWH
