You might consider a Mobile Power alternator that runs off the main engine.
See http://www.meps.com/. I have a unit running off my 200 hp Volvo and it
works well, producing up to 5kw. It will start my 16000btu A/C at an engine
rpm of 960, which produces 2.5kw. These units are generally not marketed
for boats because each engine type requires a special bracket although
brackets have been designed and built for some engines, including,
    obviously, the Volvo TAMD31P.
