T&T: How to Lengthen Anchor Chain

We have a 54 foot trawler and cruise Southern California coast.

Currently we have 50 lb Danforth and 275 feet of 3/8 chain.

I would like to lengthen my chain to around 500 feet (moorings taking all of the shallow anchorage in our area).

Is there a safe way to join the new chain to the old chain and still have the splice go through the wildcat on the windless?

Also, I am considering up-sizing to an 80 or 90 or possibly 100 lb plow or claw. Other than weight in the bow and load on the windless, any disadvantages of going with an anchor significantly heavier than the 1 lb per foot rule of thumb?

I have this fear of waking up on the rocks.

    Thanks

    Wayne
