Two weeks ago I took my Cheoy Lee 52 to a yard in St. Augustine to have some
work done. The trip took three hours and the ICW that day was very rough
due to extremely high winds. As usual, I checked the engine room every hour
and had no problems.
Three days ago my wife and I were bringing the boat back home. Within
twenty minutes I was getting water in my both of my engine filters as well as my
generator filter. I've had minor problems in the past with condensation and
after a while I get through the water with little problem. This time however
things didn't get better, I fact the Racors were filling with water so fast
(I have duel filters on each engine), I was having a hard time keeping up.
Finally, I ran out of priming fuel, even though I started the trip with over
eight gallons. In the end, after reducing speed, alternating engines and
finally letting each Racor go until the little ball cutoff the fuel supply, I
had to shut the engines down just one mile from my dock. A call to the local
Boat US tow boat got us home.
The next morning I began taking all the water out of the Racors and taking
them apart and gave them a good cleaning (although I did discover water does a
very good job cleaning them, I don't recommend it.) I called in a
professional fuel polisher and he removed the final water from my tanks.
The total of water removed was 12 gallons from my main tank (600 gallon
capacity) and 10 gallons from my day tank ( 275 gallon capacity). This was fresh
water (I tasted it) and was as clear as bottled water. My tanks have no
direct connection - each having their own fill and vent. (I can transfer fuel
through the polishing system.) There is no fuel in the bilges. Fresh water
is supplied from two outboard tanks in the stern and the levels have not
changed. Both fuel tanks are fiberglass and are centerline. The fills are not
leaking and we had no rain in the period in question, nor was the boat washed.
I have already ruled out condensation as the tanks were full. Can anybody
give me a clue as to how I could have gotten 22 gallons of fresh water in two
tanks in ten days?
