    One of the best devices out there is the Xantrex line of Link battery monitors
    (http://www.xantrex.com/web/id/97/p/1/pt/7/product.asp).

    These monitors will show you not only the instantaneous amp readings going
    in/out of your batteries, they have a very sensitive voltage meter, and do some
    very useful computations to show you how many amp hours have been used, and what
    the current state of the battery banks is.

    Adding a Link 20 to my boat was one of the best things I ever added. The manual
    is on-line at Xantrex, so you can see the installation procedure there.
