Hello All,\
A few concepts about anchoring systems.
As a general rule of thumb, it is a good idea to
look at the recommended anchor size, then take at
LEAST TWO steps UP!
The guiding light is, only when your dock
neighbors are pointing and laughing is there any
chance your anchor might be big enough.
If your boat is longer than 29 feet you should be
using 3/8 inch HT chain.
NEVER use stainless steel, unless you are going
to use it THROUGHOUT the ENTIRE anchoring system.
This means the anchor, the swivel (if installed),
the chain, the windlass. EVERYTHING!!!
There is NO SUCH THING as too much anchor, until
your boat bow is significantly (at LEAST 6 inches)
lowered in the water by the weight of the system.
Again, ALWAYS use an all chain rode. The hassle
and danger of tailing a rope windlass can NOT be
overstated.
Always use ground tackle sufficient to hold your
boat in the WORST POSSIBLE conditions. If you want
a lunch hook, it belongs on a separate system.
I have never read about a boat with a system as
described above going aground, or dragging, while
at anchor.
I wonder why?
I am absolutely certain that a LOT of people will
have other viewpoints, but considering the
importance of controlling your boat's position
what would YOU rather do???
