I put 1200 hours on a set of Covington 6-71 TIBs in a motoryacht. Covington
told me to run them at 1200 or 2200 (I2500 is top loaded rpm on this
engine). They also said that after a day of slow cruising to run them up to 2200 for
a few miles. The boat needs to be correctly propped where it will do the
full 2500 with all your gear aboard and with at least half fuel and water. They
said, further, to be religious about oil changes because of fuel dilution,
soot and etc. The bypass valve spring tension was in the center of the changes
that they made over their marinazation period of this particular engine.

When I sold the boat a couple of years ago the engine's compressions were in
    the high range of spec.
