< It looks like the over-whelming preference goes to 3 Strand New
    England ropes! >

I live on my boat in a marina that offers little protection to passing
boat wakes and have learned from the commercial guys that Nylon with
its elasticity and "spring-back" just accentuates the movement. New
England Rope makes a combination Nylon / polyester that has much less
spring back and has made living on board much more comfortable. A
friend of mine who was head of Phillips Petroleum in Venezuela told me
that they had switched all the lines on their boats to quiet them down
    at the dock.

It's a braided line with slightly less strength than straight Nylon,
but the 3/4" on my 120,000 lb. boat has held up well for the two plus
years I've been using it at the old CSY marina in Road Town, Tortola, a
marina well known for popping dock lines (yes, it's very inexpensive or
    I wouldn't be there)
