T&T: Starting Batteries

For those of us with with diesels producing less than 400HP, or so, I've never figured out why the boat manufactures are hung up on giving us 8D starting batteries. It must simply be due to cost. On every boat that I've had to or wanted to change batteries I've always replaced the 8D starting battery with two series 31s, typically Optimas. I even see 4Ds used for generators in the 12KW range. That's just overkill, when a single 31 would be more than sufficient. Even my bow thruster has a dedicated battery system using 3 Optimas, again no reason for the monster batteries.

But for those of you that just want to prove you can still man handle an 8D into and through your engine room--more power to you.

    Gil
