I have never been a fan of Garmin's draconian policies regarding their
proprietary charts. It seems to me that if I buy their hardware and then pay
additional for the charts, they should be mine to do with as I see fit, within
the limits of the law.
One of the reasons I went with the Raymarine C-120 is that it uses the
Navionics CF cards. Navionics now has a single card, the Gold XL9, which
covers the entire eastern US, from Maine to Florida, including the left coast
up as far as about Cedar Key, the Florida Keys and the Bahamas. The street
price for these cards is less than $200. The good news is that Navionics runs
an upgrade program, offering a $75 trade-in rebate. This means that for less
than $125, I can update my electronic chart portfolio annually.
