We've been using an air card for two years traveling from the Chesapeake to
Florida. We have had good connections everywhere, although I had to use an
external antenna in more remote locations. This year we have stayed near
towns and had a strong connection without the antenna.
The card is a V620 for which I paid extra based on research over a year
ago. As I said, it has worked well and, important to me, has a port to
accept the connection from the external antenna. As someone else already
said, the connection speed is much faster than dial up but not quite
broadband. We are presently in Ft Pierce City Marina which has free WiFi,
and I prefer using that.
The situation seems to change every month. Free WiFi is becoming much more
widely available, while at the same time, it was recently reported on this
list that a new air card is available that has broadband speeds. I think
you'll need to do an analysis of the specific areas you'll be cruising and
how remote your anchorages/marinas and then be prepared to keep changing as
the situation evolves.
