That's true, but it isn't just trawlers. Sailing "Truelove" here in the
Windwards, the wind is always on the nose, no matter which direction you travel.
So, we motorsail a lot. Which is one reason we bought "Seahorse," a motor
boat. But our experience with "Seahorse" has been different. Going on the
rhumbline from Beaufort NC to St. Maarten took 9 days. Going back (admittedly from
St. John, which is about 90 miles less) only took 7 at the same speed through
the water.
Good sailing (hopefully no steaming!),
John
"Seahorse"
<snip>
After many, many miles of cruising and watching our speed we have
found the currents run against the boat about 75% of the time, maybe even
more. Another, to make things even more complex, when the boat is with the
wind, the wind is against the current. You know what happens then!
We have discussed this with other trawler drivers and they say the same
phenomenon happens to them too. It seems to only affect trawlers.
