    Paul,
    Yes, a failing internal regulator may fail by going either to no field or
    full field. An external regulator may be substituted, but the conversion
    requires opening up the alternator case to make the connections inside.
    There are no instructions for this operation, as there are too many
    different alternator configurations. Your best bet is to find an alternator
    shop which is familiar with the conversion to external regulator (not all
    will be).

    If you don't want to spring for a $200+ smart regulator, I can recommend the
    Amp-Tech AMP-R14 HD; a manual, adjustable regulator with a heavy-duty output
    transistor for the field current. The voltage setpoint is adjusted by
    turning a small screw under the aluminum cover. These cost about $45 and
    are available from Great-water.com. I use just one to power both of my 120
    amp alternators on my John Deere. Best if you can mount it in an easily
    accessed location out of the engine room for easy adjustment.
