Hello All
I keep my boat on the West coast of FL on my old boat the rate went from
$3800 to $7500 in 2006. I sold that boat and bought another boat US quoted $13,000
on the new one Atlass was $7,500 I went with Atlass. I know the insurance
companies had some very big hurricane losses and I understand that it's business
and they are going to set premiums according to how they view the risk. I
don't believe they should offset it by raising rates in non hurricane areas.
What I don't understand is why the insurance companies seem to have no
interest at all in the design, condition or strength of the slip where the boat is
kept. Most boats will have to weather a storm in the slip where they are kept.
An awful lot of marinas are designed and constructed so poorly that they
simply break apart in weather that should be survivable. Pilings are often to small
to low and to infrequent. In many cases the boats would easily survive the
weather but the marina breaks apart and takes most everything with it.
I keep my boat behind my house when I built the dock I used 16" greenheart
pilings 5 on each side. They extend 15' above the high water mark and where
driven 12' into the canal bed I spent a lot of money constructing a very strong
slip. I believe it seriously increases my chances of surviving a major hurricane
yet my insurance company couldn't care less I would pay the same premium if I
where tied up to toothpicks GO FIGURE.
