This week, the law requiring 15 PPM instead of 500 PPM of sulfur in
diesel went into effect. So now we are going to be burning S15 in our
boat engines instead of S500.
This change is desirable from the standpoint of promoting more diesel
cars on the road, which is an immediate way to reduce our oil
consumption and dependence on foreign oil. However, I have grave
concerns for my boat and car engines.
Here's why. The sulfur in diesel fuel provides lubricity, which is
necessary to keep the seals in your injectors and fuel injector pump
working. In the early 1990's, when the government mandated low sulfur
diesel, there was a dramatic rise in fuel injector pump failures. I
dealt with this by using an additive, and really had good luck.
I'm paranoid about S15, because I am in the midst of having my car's
Bosch fuel injector pump rebuilt, to the tune of $700. That's piddling
compared to the cost of some of the pumps on our boat diesels. The
re-builder, Southeast Power Systems, claims the life of my pump was
shortened by low sulfur diesel.
The best way of restoring lubricity to diesel fuel is to add something,
like Stanadyne or Amzoil, etc. Phil uses Marvel Mystery oil. I recently
bought some, and it now has a disclaimer label on the neck of the
container. "This diesel fuel additive does not comply with federal low
sulfur content requirements for use in model year 2007 and newer motor
vehicles." OK, presumably this means using MM will hurt the catalytic
devices on the new engines, but will it help lubricate and prevent
early failure on our old engine's injector pumps?
I've read all I can find on the net, but most of the discussions focus
on the benefits of S15 on the new engines. What are listees adding to
their fuel to deal with the new low sulfur/low lubricating diesel? Any
ideas from this forum will be appreciated. Martin Veiner & Margaret Shearon
