    Next time I have to change one I'll call you Phil, Old Friend! I'm replacing
    one pretty much every year! This year it happened during sea trial! It
    disintegrated and the springs, or pieces thereof, lodged in the starter drive.
    To take the trannie off is a job.....Ca. 250 pounds of a job!
    The gear rattle could be from there, but when Peggy had her Bayliner 32MY with
    Hurth tranny there was the same terrible rattle anytime it was in neutral.

    Sounds to me like a spring came adrift in your vibration damper. It's an
    inexpensive repair if you do it yourself.
