How can the cartridges be kept active or is there a better printer that will
    tolerate long periods of inactivity?
    -------------------------------------------------------------
If you carry a vacuum packer aboard (we do for packaging fish etc.) you
could remove the cartridges and package them, then reinstall the cartridges
at the beginning of the summer or for the time you would be using the
printer. With the vacuum packer you would probably not need the damp cotton
since there would be no air to dry out the cartridge.

I haven't tried this because I use my printer more than you do but it is
    worth a try.
