Jeff, you're right, Semco is getting harder and harder to find. I actually
found my last container at the local West Marine, so it is available, on
occasion. At one time, when Semco was manufactured at a local (San
Francisco Bay) facility, it enjoyed a great reputation in the usual
write-up's from Sea Magazine and other regional publications. I used it at
that time on various sailboats we owned and loved it. There were darker
teak stains around, for those who wanted that look, but I found its standard
"honey tone" color to be ideal to my taste.
Flash forward 25 years to today. The name Semco has been sold to another
company and I have no idea where they get what they market. Its honey tone
color still looks as nice as it did years ago, plus they now have some other
color variants for those who want them. I have used it on the teak caprails
which surround my aft cockpit and am generally pleased with the results.
However, exposed to the sun everyday, I find that today's Semco, even if you
apply 3-4 coats, thins and weathers quicker than I seem to remember years
ago. It does not, for instance, last an entire year! It's simple enough to
apply another coat or two, with minimal preparation, so that counts for
something. No need to use bleaches or brighteners, just hose the salt off,
let it dry and reapply Semco.
I like its color and look, abandoned varnish and competition in the shiny
derby around the docks years ago, so Semco suits my needs ideally. But I
long for the days when it would last two years or more before needing
another coat.

Subject: T&T: Teak sealers...
After many responses to my request for teak ideas, I settled on using
Semco's cleaner and honeytone sealer. It seems like this product is almost
impossible to obtain today. The company itself doesn't ever answer their
phone. It has a "delayed shipment" status at places like shipstore.com.
I'm worried that this is the wrong wagon to hitch onto...
...Jeff
