It would be great if manufactures guaranteed their products for ten years.
But as far as I know, none do. I am not willing to go without an inverter to
spite them. I do work for West Marine a few hours a week, but the following is
not a commercial for them, just information..
For about 8% of the cost of the product, you can get a performance guarantee
from West Marine. You don't have to buy the product from them to purchase the
warrantee. Yes, it is a 2 year "extended warrantee" but with a twist: The
product performance warrantee adds two years to the manufacturers warrantee, but
also cover wear and tear and power surge for the whole term, that means
lightening strikes and other wear and tear that the manufacturer will call normal and
not cover. The criteria for a claim is "I don't think this unit is working as
well as it did when it was new." Also, the warrantee is transferable and
renewable, indefinitely. The only possible down side is that if the unit needs to
be replaced (albeit with a newer, more feature packed model) the warrantee
company is then off the hook. I bought a neglected De Fever 41, and replaced
everything. All the electronics came to a little under 10K. It cost me 500 dollars
to warrantee the whole thing. If you purchase several items on one invoice,
they can be lumped together instead of paying for each separately. For example,
the cost for 4K to 10 K is the same. So if you insure a 4K item, the cost is
sort of high, around 12.5%. If you insure 10K worth of stuff, the cost is
pretty low, around 5%.
