I may have mentioned that there were a few "quirks" about Alanui, the 1.5 year old Nordhavn 40II I just purchased. One of the quirks was the PO installed a Bosch dishwasher instead of a 2nd Sub-Zero freezer in the galley. My wife and I would prefer the additional capacity of a 2nd freezer much rather than have a dishwasher on board. So, today, with the help of a great friend, we removed it from the boat. Two memorable things related to the removal:
a. The smell of the water that came out the drain hose was unbelievable. We have had the boat for 2 months, and I don't know how long it had been since it was used, but the water was really rancid. Smelled like bad feet, really bad feet.
b. The fitting that transitioned the PEX to the brass is in fact a quick disconnect. We learned this after removing the brass union, pulling the washer half way out, getting it hung up, pushing it back in, cutting the fitting off, then realizing it was a quick disconnect. Next time I will spend more time studying the fixture!
So the question is now, is a Sub-Zero freezer worth the money? It's a bad sign when all the retailers say "call for pricing" and you can't find a single price on the entire internet, including EBAY. That tells me they are proud, really proud of these units. I got a few reviews from e-opinions that suggest there were some reliability issues, but it was a statistically insignificant sample. One reason to go ahead with a 2nd Sub-Zero is to have it be the same as the fridge already installed. That would help in resale I'd think? Although I doubt anyone is really going to make a go/no-go based on a freezer. So what say you boaters out there? Who makes the best quality under counter freezer (120v), or perhaps the better question is, is the Sub-Zero worth a few extra bucks?
Thanks, Scott Bulger, Alanui, Seattle WA
