Hello All
We recently sold a 55' Sea Ranger that boat has a semi displacement hull so I
don't know if that's really a trawler or not it certainly looks like a
trawler but I guess it depends on who you talk to. That boat at displacement speed
(about 9.5 knots) burned 8 GPH with a pair of Detroit 671 naturals. We sold
that to get a larger boat now I would like to say we needed more room and if I
tried I could probably make an argument for it. We don't travel light kids,
dogs, relatives, In laws etc. but truth be told like so many of us that are lucky
enough to live in the greatest country on the face of the earth we are spoiled
rotten.
So we purchased a 61' Hatteras MY this boat has a pair of Detroit 1271 TI
650HP each at full power she burns 70GPH that's not a MIS print SEVENTY gallons
per hour. But at displacement speed (about 10 knots) she burns 9-10 GPH.
Considering that this boat is 6' longer and considerably heavier that's not so bad.
We don't cross oceans coastal cruising only so having a hull form designed
for peak efficiency and superior performance in rough seas is less important
than being incredibly comfortable (did I mention we are spoiled).
What I'm getting to is that for coastal cruising you might find very little
difference in comfort of motion and fuel consumption with a true trawler of
full displacement vrs a semi displacement MY or fast trawler. So you might very
well be making a good choice putting creature comfort and your wife's
preferences above having a super efficient blue water boat if your planing to do
coastal cruising.
