I have a President 35 Sundeck. It is classified as a double cabin Motor
yacht, but below the water line it has a semi-displacement hull like Trawler
style boats including Grand Banks, Albin, and Marine Trader. With twin
225hp Lehman diesels, I cruise about 8kts and top out about 11 to 12kts -
    but I do not plane.

I have listened to "motor yacht" owners complain about their hull forms in
conditions on Chesapeake Bay. I suspect that they had been proceeding at
trawler speeds instead of driving into the 3 to 4 foot waves and rollers
instead of achieving a plane a higher speeds and fuel costs. I think the
boats are designed to be operated that way. Hopefully, a few owners of this
class of boat can comment. Just remember, their hull designs can differ
    significantly.

Your Wife's analysis is cogent, but needs to take into account those times
when you will have to travel at higher speeds. In my tour of the Hatteras
factory, I noted that all the vessels had stabilizers and bow thrusters. I
bring this up because the stabilizers were relatively small on both
motoryachts and sportfishermen. To me, this means that they anticipate high
speed operation most of the time.

    | And so what is the wisdom of the group. I also wonder about the
    | open-water stability of such motor yachts compared to a hard-chined
    | so-called "fast trawlers" or an actively stabilized full-displacement
    | boat?
