In contrast, humans, especially in panic situations, can exert up to a full
horsepower for a few seconds, jamming the control from one extreme to the
    other
in a small faction of the time it takes an electric control to respond. If I
spin the wheel, I can drive my rudder from lock to lock in two seconds. It
takes my autopilot at least 10 seconds to do the same. Similarly there is
    almost
no delay from forward to reverse in my mechanical shift gear. It takes a
friend's electrically shifted gear at least five seconds to accomplish the
    same
    task.

Close quarter boat maneuvering is qualitatively different with electronic
controls. You must plan your actions further in advance, anticipating a
    delay of
several seconds before the boat begins to respond. In close in maneuvering
electrical controls make a 30 foot trawler respond like a 60 foot trawler.
    No
quick slamming into reverse to stop headway when pulling into a slip.

You may well wonder how I know this.

If I had an engine control system (on a small boat up to 65') that took 5
seconds to go from forward to reverse and it was supposed to work that way not
mis adjusted or broken I WOULD THROW IT OVERBOARD My god 5 seconds is an
eternity when waiting for a shift. I can't speak for every manufacturer but ZF
Mathers certainly does not have a delay like that. If the Mathers system is
programmed for no delay the difference between it and mechanical is only
evident if you really move the lever fast in normal operation there is no
difference. I would take a guess and say forward to reverse with no programmed delay
would be 1 to 1.5 seconds. The primary advantage to electronic is that it is
very user friendly much more so than mechanical. I have owned and installed
for customers many of these systems and I would never except big delays like
that neither would my customers it would defeat the purpose of going
electronic. From what I'm hearing on this thread there must be some really bad systems
out there or some badly mis adjusted systems probably the later.
