    Phil, re carriers.

The advertising of both of these companies is patently false; pure BS.
It is a big joke for Cingular to claim it has fewer dropped calls as a
percentage of total. Guess what? It's true for Cingular Europe, but not
for the US. Slight credibility gap since they don't tell you it is only
for part of their world-wide system.

I have Cingular, but know after my research on the the website,
http://www.wirelessadvisor.com/ and other cellular sites, that Cingular
is the worst performing carrier, definitely bottom of the totem pole.
This is a good example of size (bigger) not leading to innovation.
Suggest you spend some time checking out this site. FYI: the greatest
number of high speed towers is now owned by Sprint, not Cingular or
    Verizon.

I'm a cruiser, and as such, I want the best provider for all the
communication services I need, i.e., wireless net access, email, and
voice communication, that is consistent, both at home and while away on
the water. Believing the advertising, or talking to a provider's sales
personnel, has only led me down the wrong path on several occasions.
The technology of wireless is changing too rapidly and their own
    personnel are misinformed.

Here is an example. Most of the cruisers I encountered this winter had
Verizon because they thought it had the best technology and the best
high-speed coverage - broadband or fast national access. Maybe so, but
it depends where they have towers only. Their technology is actually
older. It is the proven EVDO, which stands for Evolution Data Optimized
    (data only).

Cingular has chosen to go with HSDPA, which stands for High Speed Data
Packet Access. It has simultaneous data and voice. Better, right?
Wrong! There isn't very much coverage yet for HSDPA, so if you want it
now and live in a remote area, like NC, you can forget it.

What all this means is that you can't find the best provider, for all
services, for all areas, as of today. It also means that we are going
to continue to waste money for expensive cell phones and expensive air
cards to be able to stay in touch, while the technology is changing.

I appreciate the posts on TTL on the topic of wireless communications
aboard as it has saved me from making some costly mistakes. We need to
    hear more on this subject.
