Admiral Bruno Augenti, head of the Marine Index Bureau, an advisor to marine
insurance companies, was the principal insurance investigator. He established
that the Italian crew failed to properly ballast the Andrea Doria when it
left New York. At that time supplies and fuel oil were cheaper in Europe and the
Italian Line wanted to save money. The ship was top heavy when it left port
and was in a marginally stable condition. When coming out of a fog bank the
Stockholm sighted the Andrea Doria on a possible collision course. Through a
communication misunderstanding both ships turned toward the same direction and the
Stockholm's ice breaker bow caught the Andrea Doria almost amidships. The cut
was a tringular wedge from below the water line to high on the hull. The
Andrea Doria began to fill almost immediately, listed severely, eventually ending
up on its side before it sank about 12 hours later. The Stockholm and Ile d'
France rescued most of the crew and passengers. Other ships assisted. The
Italian Line refused to let divers investigate the sunken ship fearing lawsuits for
triple damages because of negligence. As a result there was no insurance
settlement for the loss of the ship.
Personal note: At the time, I was a member of the NTRB and the Marine Board
of the NAS. The fact that two high profile ships, the flagships of their
respective lines, could collide 50 miles off the US coast having observed each
other on radar for the previous half hour was a matter of great concern to
everyone in the marine industry. These were not ships run by third world crews and
masters holding mail order licenses, but by by the top personnel in their
respective companies. The NAS funded a first of ite kind study on "Maritime
Collisions, Rammings and Groundings" and established the horrifying fact that, on a
workdwide basis, at least one ship a day is lost through this kind of accident.
Be careful out there!
