Recent marina visit (Nassau Harbour Club) experienced a significant voltage
imbalance on the 230 volt dockside power: 110 on one "phase", 130 on second
"phase".
Either an undersized neutral on their power, or (more likely) a corroded
terminal on the neutral.
Either way, got me to thinking about isolation - voltage boost transformer
for the dockside power connection.
My boat (DeFever 44+5) is wired for a "230 volt 50 amp" input. Actually the
AC distribution is two separate 50 amp 120 volt circuits: one for air
conditioners, one for "house circuits". That is, there is no 230 volt
appliance on the boat.
Google search for marine isolation - voltage boost transformers yield two
answers: Charles Ind, and Marinco. 12 KW and 12.5 KW, 235 pounds and 285
pounds. Both of these units are approximately 170 - 250 volt input; thus
appear to use the two "hot" phases, and float the neutral. Thus certainly
would have fixed the problem that I had in Nassau.
But I am not sure that either of these units is a good answer. First, due
to weight and size, I was looking for a 6 KW 120 volt unit, use two each so
that I would have smaller - lighter blocks to install. It will be very
difficult to install either of the two 230 volt 12 KW units.
I am also concerned that at times I need to power the boat from a single
phase 120 volt circuit, 230 volt may not be available. I have found 230
volts unavailable twice at dockage so far. I understand that only 120 volts
available is fairly common. If I install a single 12 KW 230 volt unit, I
would need to add bypass switches if only 120 volts is available.
Complicates the installation. And operation from a low current 120 volt
unit (though current limited) may have higher voltage drop thus desire for
voltage boost remains important.
Has any list member been through this trade-off? What solutions are
available? Has anyone found a marine rated 6 KW 120 volt isolation and
(automatic) voltage boost transformer?
Thanks in advance.
