There are a few sailboat owners on the
"Live-Aboard List" that have 100 amp alternators
that use too much engine horsepower if they charge
while trying to maneuver the boat. These people
turn off the alternator to gain back the 2 to 4
horsepower for that reason. Of course these boats
have 10 or 12 horsepower engines so the need is
evident. However they like the rapid charging the
alternators provide when the engine is only being
run to charge the batteries, so they do not intend
to install a smaller alternator.
This might be considered a case of an alternator
being 'too large', or maybe not...
