Given the abundance of 30A 1120V only in these parts, and sometimes not
    that,
I've been looking at the Y adapters to take off two 30A and get 50A
    240V.
Expensive little blighters. Somewhere in the dim recesses of my brain I
    recall
that there is a amperage limitation that still results in making it
    lower power
than the 50A 240V connection. Anybody know about this and have used
    one?

Yes, and you just have 60 total amps to play with instead of 100. Although, as I'm sure you know, you can't draw the full rated amperage for any length of time either way.

These folks have used splitters all the time. In fact they have a "smart" 2 - 30 to 1 - 50 amp Y in stock just the other day along with a "dumb" one as I recall.
