T&T: Filtering Fuel

(no email)
Date: Fri Jun 30 2006 - 22:24:48 EDT

 Hi All,
Now let me see if I am getting the information on
this subject close to correct.

The Racor 2, 10, and 30 micron filter elements
all allow the same fuel flow rates.
The filter element ratings mean that 50% of
particles of the size indicated are stopped,
leaving the other 50% to flow on down the fuel
line.
The filter element installed on the engine
(secondary?) is almost always a 2 micron filter,
but can be difficult to change.
The Racor elements can be purchased for from 6 to
10 bucks each.

OK. If all the above is true then I would want to
install 4 Racor filters. Two in series on each of
two legs of a switchable filter pack. All my
elements would be 2 micron. I would install vacuum
gauges after the second filter of the 'filter
pack', and switch to the unused filters as soon as
I see any rise in the vacuum reading on the vacuum
gauge. I would then change the bad filter out,
bleed to remove all air, and be ready to switch
back when the need arose.

It obviously would behoove me to clean the fuel
tank or tanks thoroughly to prevent the
contamination of the fuel in the first place.

It might also be a good idea to modify the fuel
tanks so the fuel is actually drawn from the
absolute bottom of the lowest point of the tank.
Ask Norm. This works. Again, ask Norm as I have no
diesel engine and no experience with them...
