In our transit, last week, of the Champlain Canal, we found the supposedly
17' clearance more like 15'-6," which is what the lockmaster said it was, and
what we have always known it to be since the generating station was built. If
you need more, it's best to call a few days ahead, so they can lower the
pool. We wrote the Canal Corp. anyway, and suggested a clearance board be
installed there. Today, we received this response:

Thank you for contacting the New York State Canal Corporation.

According to our Canal Director of Policy and Implementation, a
clearance gauge has recently been installed at the C-5 bridge. The
Operators do provide the 15' 6" clearance as normal, however, they also
inform boaters of our ability to provide 17' 3" or 19' clearance upon
request. It was recently brought to our attention that the Canal
Cruising Guide has this level listed at 21.48 fixed crest, but that the
asterisks noting the 15' normal, are misplaced on the chart.

We sincerely apologize for any confusion or inconvenience you
experienced while attempting to navigate through C-5. Please be advised
that we will look to increase the signage at the C-5 Bridge as well as
make the necessary corrections in our 2007 Canal Cruising Guide.

If you have any further questions on this please feel free to contact
    us again.

    Sincerely,
    The Department of Public Affairs
