I responded during the last thread on boat name boards that I would go down
to my boat and get the name of the company that made them; I've finally done
that. The company is Danthonia Designs. They primarily make signs for
commercial businesses, new real estate developments, etc. Their web page is at link
below. I have photos of my carved and gilded name boards and will send these
to anyone who would like to see how they look. They are made out of HDU.
Following is an extract on HDU from their website:
For years, wood was the primary carving material available to sign makers.
Today, high density urethane (HDU) lets us create a superior product.
Traditional wood signs have to contend with the adverse effects of weather--warpage,
water damage, etc. Our signs carry the authentic wood sign look, but will last
for years in all kinds of weather.
I bought the previous name boards from BoatUS; they were made from mahogany
wood with carved and gilded lettering. After the second year, they began to
look "weathered" and worn. I begin to have to do annual maintenance e.g. sand
then down and reapply varnish. I gave up after a couple of years of doing this
as they still looked bad after the work. I ordered the HDU signs from
Danthonia; this is the third year and they look like they were just installed. No
affiliation with Danthonia.....
