    >From Mike in China:

This is a link to the NEF engines, in case this has not been posted previously.

I am over at Bill Kimley's Seahorse Marine. There is a 4 cylinder NEF 100 out in the shed. A close inspection summary.

There are Parts and shop manuals available in paper and on CD.
The engine has no liners, is rated as a "one time rebuild".
The dipstick is at the top, has easy access, either side.
Breather traps oil and feeds into the air intake. The trap prevents engine runaway.
All except the oil filter have excellent access.
All 3 starter bolts are easily accessible.
There is no Turbo and the engine is rated Tier II. (Bill says, but can not confirm)
There is a power takeoff on the ZF transmission.
The engine can be run at up to 28 degrees of heel, as under sail.
    The coolant system is vented.
The starting does not need glow plugs until -10 C, -14 F.
Oil consumption is rated as one tenth of one percent of fuel consumption. In other words, 1 gallon of oil with 1000 gallons of fuel.

Oil change interval is 600 hours. Very good.

Questions that I would like to clarify, include.
The material used in the heat exchanger.
The micron ratings of the fuel, fuel prefilter and the oil filter.

    Commnets:
The oil sump pan is sheet metal. It appears to be sturdy. It's too bad it's not cast aluminum.

The wiring leading to the engine stop device should be well isolated and protected, in case of fire, excess heat, etc.

The difference between the 4 grades of this engine(high speed, light, medium, heavy duty) is dealt with in the injector pump timing.

I have taken about 2 dozen pictures of the engine and details of it's components.

The links to the detail sheets for the NEF 100 and 150, plus this material should give the rest of you plenty of fodder for discussion.

    Mike Maurice
    On Bill's machine (he's napping).
