Although it is contrary to my mercenary interests to say so, Bob brings
up a good point. First, determine if you actually have a problem. In
this case if you're just talking and you can do that ok, or if you are
e-mailing/surfing, and those speeds are ok, what, you worry? (Remember
that even if you can talk ok or get a connection, data throughput will
increase with signal strength). Then, start simple. Try a cheap
external antenna, like the Wilson trucker antenna and its ilk. Ok, then
try a real nice marine antenna. Put the biggest, low loss cable on it
you can afford and install properly. Lastly, if still not happy,
intorduce amplification into the mix. Every step brings additional
complications, points of potential failure, and expense. If all that
still fails you, try a satellite phone, or call the marine telephone
operator on the VHF, or maybe just shut up and enjoy the cruise!

Lest everyone start running out to buy antennas and amplifiers, I get
the
same result as John with just a cellphone. (I have not been up the
Hudson.)
