Hi, `Steve,
We have the Shakespeare 3db dual-band antenna as well as the 555 card, and
are quite pleased with the coverage -- now. I should mention that the antenna
lead is RG-8, and a friend recently questioned whether the 25' run to the
antenna (30' above water) was worth the loss, compared to a lower antenna and
shorter lead. We have adapters for our cell phones as well as the air card and
using the antenna definitely makes the difference between reception and none
in some places.
We do a round trip from our summer "home" on Lake Champlain to NYC, along
the Jersey coast, thru the Delaware & Chessie to Beaufort and then offshore to
Mayport, FL, stopping over at Charleston. We make many stops along the way
at or near homes of friends, and with the exception of NC (which is getting
better), we are not without service for very long, if at all, anywhere. The
exceptions seem to be when anchored near large transmitting antennae (Annapolis,
Cape May, Barnegat), when speed is low despite 5 bars. Verizon seems to be
doing a good job for us, and I don't see an affordable alternative better than
the Iridium 9505 that we use for passages, further offshore, or the odd time
inshore when cell coverage isn't there.
Regards,
John

>>As a Digital Amp user, I wanted to chime in here. Our coverage in our
previous marina was horrible, at best. I use Nextel, it's important for
me to be able to field weekend emergency calls from the boat, so
reliable service is high on the list. I used a Shakespeare 4' dual band
antenna with Digital Antenna's amp, with a direct connection to the
phone antenna jack. It's a bit of a short lead to use the phone, but it
works. I imagine if my phone were bluetooth compatible, that would be
the hot lick.
