T&T: Electric powered boats - Already Here

Sorry for jumping in late here but the internet service is very spotty in
    the Bahamas.

A listee asked if any listees were actually using Electric Powered boats and
although my answer to that is no I did go cruising on "APRIL K" while
visiting Paul and April Smith In Green Turtle Cay last week and can pass on a
couple of observations This is the boat that has been featured in PassageMaker
twice over the last couple of years so you can check your old copies for more
technical information about the boat. "APRIL K" is an Ocean Alexander 42
aftcabin that has had a six foot extension added (not a cockpit) and is driven
by two Siemens D E motors which are powered with a generator coupled to a
Cummins 210. We have cruised with April and Paul some for the last two years so
I know that the boat is heavily used and the system has several hundred
hours on it. (It's not a dock hugger) I was impressed first of all buy the amount
of room gained in the engine room by installing this system. After
replacing two large 3208 Cats with a single Cummins 210 and two small electric
motors you have enough room left over to throw a party down there.
I wondered about the maneuverability of the boat and after leaving the dock,
going out the narrow and busy channel from White Sound, cruising for almost
three hours and returning to their dock, the boat appeared to handle as well
as any other 48 foot boat that I have ever been on.
The thing that really impressed me was the quietness of the ride. Paul has
taken extra steps to muffle the Cummins generator so that as we drove the
boat from the fly bridge the only thing that you hear other than the hum of the
shafts and props is the WIND. Moving along at 7 or 8 knots on a boat that
size and only hearing the sound of the wind is a neat sensation. Almost like
being on a sail boat. It really is great to carry on a three hour
conversation about all kinds of boat stuff without having to talk over the top of normal
    engine noise.
If you see APRIL K along the waterway someplace be sure to stop and
introduce yourself to Paul cuss he loves to talk about his boat or just boating in
    general
