My 1983 DE Fever trawler needed to have many wooden deck plugs replaced. My
dock mate showed me a tool he had used very successfully. It is called
"Roto-Broach" and is intended to be used by auto body workers to cut out spot welds.
It is basically a miniature hole saw, but the center is a spring loaded
(retractable) point. It cuts the plug pretty clean and does no damage to the screw
head. I got mine at a specialty tools shop in San Bruno CA
