An update on the saga of finding a weather window.
About a week ago the Fleet Numeric Model was showing a calm area
developing west of the Southern Calif. coast, sometime about now. There
were also some indications of an offshore trend, but not necessarily
extending very far offshore from the beach. In other words, some east
wind pushing heated land air out over the ocean.
In any event, the forecast now appears to have some serious laydown
occurring near Pt. Conception sometime between Friday night and Sunday
morning. It also appears that it may be blowing within 50 miles of the
coast and even if the wind is light near the coast, the surface
conditions may be pretty lumpy. Scott's boat has stabilizers and they
will get a work out, if this comes about.
Overall the conditions argue for moving a full displacement boat with
stabilizers up the coast, as long as we don't come expecting a flat calm
ocean. Conditions on up to San Francisco appear to be within reason,
10-20 knots and may be better the further north we get. All this argues
for making the attempt.
Will make an effort to provide some updates while we are underway. On
the other hand, if we disappear without a trace, you will have to factor
that into your appreciation of the situation. After all this sector is a
mirror image of the Bermuda Triangle.
Regards,
Mike
