I Highly recommend WinPatrol, which remain resident and alerts you as
every new auto-startup program is installed. Since most malware has
to install itself somehow, this provides a bulletproof way of
stopping most of it before it can do any harm. It allows you to see
a list of everything that starts up automatically and delete or
temporarily deactivate the programs you do not want to run. Best of
all it is free, although if you pay a bit extra you can have access
to a web based database of commonly installed programs.
